I went back to look over some quotes I really liked in Perks, so today I’m going to share some life lessons I learned from this book:
-Self love comes before anything. If you constantly put yourself down, you will (most likely) surround yourself with people who do the same. Charlie learns this when Bill tells him “We accept the love we think we deserve”
-If you love someone, show them. Sam says, “you can’t sit there and put someone’s life before yours and think that counts as love. You have to do things.” I think that this quote could be an eye opener for some people. You have to reach out to them, make the first move, do what you feel is best to show them you love them, and if they don’t like it, stop. You still showed them your love.
-Blaming people for bad things gets you nowhere. Charlie realizes this in the hospital after realizing what his Aunt Helen did to him. He says that he would have to blame everyone for doing Helen wrong, and what happened to them, too. It doesn’t help.
-You aren’t your past. Charlie writes, “I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we’ll never know most of them. But even if we don’t have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there.”
-It’s okay to feel things even if other people have it worse.
-Sometimes, being alive is enough.
-You’re going to be okay.
